The central part of the temple is a small two-column church on a basement with two single-domed chapels. The side facades were supplemented with later additions, a refectory and a gallery. The decoration of the church is modest and monastic, adorned only with pilasters. Both the church and the chapels have attics with decorative semicircles. The five domes are powerful and closely positioned.

In 1635, D.M. Pozharsky brought a gilded Cross of the Lord, three arshins tall, with a bas-relief made of pomegranate wood from the Solovetsky Monastery to the church. This Cross, possessing healing properties and taken annually to the Nizhny Novgorod Fair, is now located in the Vysokovskaya Church of Nizhny Novgorod. Other relics of the cathedral included the banner of the people's militia from 1612, a field icon, a triptych of D.M. Pozharsky, and an image of the Kazan Mother of God, embroidered with silk by the wife of Prince Praskovya Bartholomeevna. In 1827, the militia's banner was transferred to the Armory Chamber, and it is now in Nizhny Novgorod.

After the monastery was closed, the cathedral became a parish church.

In 1879, the church underwent reconstruction, with a refectory added in a pseudo-Byzantine style with one dome, and the tented bell tower replaced with a three-tiered one. The new bell tower acquired heavy forms. It is adorned with a decorative tent, columns at the corners of the second and third tiers, a snake-like design under the cornice of the second tier, crackers, and a frieze of the first tier with niches. The territory of the cathedral is surrounded by a fence with stone pillars, gates with an ornate metal grille, and an Empire-style chapel in the northeast corner. The reconstruction did not affect the eastern altar facade. The five apses across the width of the chapels have their own apses, protruding from under the upper ones. Currently, the church has restored the fence and resumed services.
