Church of the Savior Not Made by Hands in Balakhna

Фото 1
The church was built in 1668 with funds from the salt industrialist from Balakhna, G. E. Dobrynin. In 1690, it burned down, but it was restored in 1702 and 1704. The domes were covered with tiles, and a tent-shaped bell tower adorned with colored tiles was added to the western side. Although the bell tower was built 35 years later, it harmoniously blends with the church. All the windows of the building have unique shaped brick frames and kokoshniks that take into account lighting conditions. The church was restored in 1957 and 1962.

The Savior Church of the 17th century stands out for its elegance of details and sophistication of lines. Its architecture resembles the Nativity of Christ Church, with the Ionic order being softer and more feminine than the Doric. The church is located between the Volga River and the Neteyka River, on the ancient Nikitinskaya Street in the Kuznechnaya sloboda, where two wooden churches stood in the 16th century: the Savior and Nikita churches. The Nikita Church was destroyed in 1610 during a raid, and although it was not restored, its name is often used to refer to the stone Savior Church built in 1668 with funds from G. E. Dobrynin. Originally, it was a five-domed church with a refectory, without a bell tower. The domes were covered with 'German' iron, but in 1690, a fire destroyed the roofs, domes, and crosses. In 1702 and 1704, the church was restored, covering the domes with glazed tiles and adding a tent-shaped bell tower with colored tiles. In the early 20th century, the domes were made of iron, and the windows were enlarged, changing their shape. After the 1962 restoration, the church almost returned to its original appearance, except for the added watchman's lodge.

The bell tower, built in 1702, 30 years after the church, harmoniously complements it. It rests on four corner pillars, with the eastern pair shifted off the building's axis to avoid blocking the western window of the refectory. To align the center of the western wall of the bell tower with the main axis of the church, the builders altered the shape of the bell tower to a rhomboid. The slender tent of the bell tower stands out with its large dimensions, adding sharpness to the composition. The details of the cornices and window frames of the bell tower are executed with the same care as those on the facades of the church, but in a different plastic system. In accordance with Baroque principles, the kokoshniks are replaced with jagged pediments made of curved bricks. The frame of the southern window of the second tier of the bell tower is particularly beautiful. It resembles a kokoshnik, but the master chose a version resembling a crown. The three-beamed kokoshnik of the window is distinguished by its elegance, with its middle beam adorned with a green tile, and the window frame with a white-green tile braid. The walls of the bell tower are decorated with polychrome tiles featuring designs of flowers, birds, vases, and cartouches. The selection of colors and the finesse of the relief place the Balakhna tiles of the 18th century among the foremost known centers of this production in Russia.
