Church of the Savior Not Made by Hands in Kostroma

Фото 1
The stone church was built in the mid-18th century on the territory of the Spaso-Zaprudnensky Monastery. In 1724, due to its small number of monks, the monastery lost its independence and was annexed to the Bogoyavlensky Monastery. There was a legend that the altar of the church is located above the stump of a pine tree, where the Theodorovskaya Icon of the Holy Mother of God appeared to Prince Vasily Yaroslavich. In 1760, the Kostroma Spiritual Seminary was transferred to Zaprudnya, and the lower floor of the Savior Church housed a classroom and a library. By that time, the church had three altars: on the second floor, in the summer church, there was an altar in honor of the Not Made by Hands Image of the Savior, and on the first floor, altars in honor of the Theodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God, St. Alexius, Metropolitan of Moscow, and Great Martyr Theodore Stratilates. The bell tower stood separately. In 1764, after the secularization of church lands, the monastery buildings were transferred to the seminary, and the Savior Church began to receive funds from the Cathedral of the Assumption. In 1806, a refectory with a warm chapel and a two-tiered bell tower were added to the church. After a fire in 1813, the seminary moved to the Bogoyavlensky Monastery, and the Spaso-Zaprudnensky Church remained 'without a parish' until 1861. In 1838, a chapel in honor of the Entry into the Temple of the Mother of God was arranged on the lower floor on the southern side, and in 1855, a chapel in the name of St. Dimitri of Priluki was arranged on the northern side. In 1864, the upper church was reconstructed into a warm two-altar church with a right chapel in honor of the Theodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God and in the name of the Equal-to-the-Apostles Grand Duke Vladimir and Martyr Natalia, and a left chapel in the name of the Venerable Martyr Andrew of Crete and Martyr Tatiana. Since 1895, the church in honor of the Not Made by Hands Image of the Savior on the second floor became 'warm.'

After 1917, the church continued to function, although the bells were thrown down from the bell tower, and many tombstones in the cemetery were destroyed. The rector of the church was Priest Ioann Stepanov.

The church is a single-domed, two-story building of the type octagon on a square, with one apse, executed in the style of provincial Baroque. The refectory and bell tower, added in the early 19th century, are made in the style of Classicism.
