The church is in a deserted and ruined state, located in an extremely inaccessible and impassable area. Only pits overgrown with nettles remain from the former huts, and the ancient cemetery with old monuments has turned into a bumpy wild field.

Against the backdrop of a desolate and uninhabited area, the church, standing in the center of a large clearing, impresses with its size, two-tiered architecture, tall bell tower, and massive brick structures. Frescoes have partially survived in the lower tier.

Geographical isolation and the lack of roads protected the church for some time. Now there is nothing left to take, but vandals usually do not calm down until the building is completely dismantled brick by brick.

Since 2006, the church has become a popular spot for geocachers and treasure hunters. Numerous tree arsons, destroyed anthills, and toppled tombstones have been noted around it, while tourists leave behind trash and fire pits.

The Church of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God in Veretyevo, having lost its roof, suffers from atmospheric precipitation and frost, and the masonry is overgrown with trees.

There is hope for the preservation of the church. It is under the care of the Alexander Male Monastery in Suzdal. For assistance, one should contact the archpriest of the Suzdal Monastery Deanery, Archimandrite Innocent Yakovlev, the rector of the Holy Alexander Male Monastery.

On August 19, 2011, Archimandrite Innocent Yakovlev was appointed Bishop of Nizhny Tagil and Serov and on August 24 went to his new place of service. The guardianship over the Veretyevo Smolensk Church has been temporarily suspended.
