Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Medushi

Фото 1
The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the village of Medushi is located in a dense forest, on the grounds of a cemetery. This large building features interesting architecture from the period of Russian classicism, where white stone blocks are actively used. The white stone is applied both in the masonry of architectural details of the facade and in the main structures, giving the facades a festive appearance due to the white stone inserts of various profiles.

The interior space of the church impresses with its scale, adorned with columns and choirs for singers on both sides. Stairs built into the walls lead to the choirs. Light enters the church through a powerful drum of the rotunda with eight windows and large windows of the square. The floor is laid with white stone slabs, which, unfortunately, are now partially destroyed by vandals. The refectory features a complex system of vaults supported by columns.

The bell tower harmoniously complements the main rotunda with its round ringing tier.

The church was surrounded by a stone fence, of which mainly ruins remain; only the main eastern gate and one corner tower have survived.

Encountering such a majestic architectural ensemble in a desolate forest area leaves an indelible impression. However, the church is in an emergency state, actively deteriorating and damaged by vegetation.

In late 2005, the Vladimir Diocesan Administration appealed to state authorities for the protection of monuments, requesting permission to carry out conservation and restoration work on the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Medushi area of the Kovrov district. This event became a ray of hope for restoration after decades of destruction, misfortunes, and vandalism.
