In the late 18th century, in 1779 and 1797, two wooden churches were built in Kurtsovo, and by 1867 a stone church appeared. These churches were constructed to combat the schism that was widespread among the peasants and urban residents of the Zavolzhye region. Judging by the records, the struggle in the Uzoletsk cluster of villages was successful, as the residents of the villages where the Donetsk craft thrived, according to preserved metric books, regularly performed all church rituals: they baptized children, got married, and buried adults and especially children, most of whom did not live to see their first year. These factors, the absence of oppression from the Orthodox Church compared to the Old Believers, and relative freedom compared to serf peasants, played an important role in shaping the consciousness of the Uzoletsk peasants and contributed to the development of their artistic inclinations.
