By the decree of the Holy Synod dated May 21, 1837, with the blessing of Bishop Nila of Vyatka and Slobodskoy and the efforts of parishioners, the church was opened in 1838.

The stone church of the Nativity of the Virgin was laid on September 8, 1875. According to the clerical record, its construction in the village of Khlebnikovo was completed in 1882 thanks to the efforts of parishioners and the support of the owner of the glass factory, Kazan merchant Prokhor Georgievich Ulyanov. The church building is made of stone, with a bell tower and an iron roof. The main altar was consecrated in honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the right altar in honor of the Holy Prophet Elijah, and the left altar in honor of Saint George the Victorious.

During the Soviet era, the clergy and parishioners of the Khlebnikovo church remained true to traditions, joining the Krasnokokshaysk Orthodox administration of Old Believers in 1926, and in the 1930s, the Mari Vicarage of the Nizhny Novgorod Diocese. The church in Khlebnikovo was closed on April 21, 1939, and later housed an MTS, a forge, and a House of Culture. During this period, the dome and bell tower were destroyed.

Parish life resumed in 2001, and from July of that year, services were held in a prayer house. In 2007, the church building was returned to the faithful, and services began in April of that year.

The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary has been recognized as an architectural monument by the decision of the Ministry of Culture of the Mari El Republic.

Since 2013, the restoration of the church has continued: a large refectory has been equipped, the altar of Saint George the Victorious has been repaired, a church shop is operating, bells have been purchased, and a new bell tower is being built. In the altar of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, by the blessing of Priest Sergey Kozhevnikov, an altar was built instead of the boiler room. Three altars, sacrificial tables, vestments, and church utensils have been acquired.

There is a consecrated spring in the name of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in the village of Ivskaya Vershina, where a cross procession is held twice a year.

On the territory of the church is the burial site of one of the first Russian pilots, Nikolai Kirillovich Kokorin, who died in 1917, as well as a monument to the residents of the Khlebnikovo settlement who fell in the Great Patriotic War.

The name of the Holy Martyr Sergey Alexandrovich Uvitsky, a protodeacon and candidate of theology, a victim of Stalinist repressions, is associated with the village of Khlebnikovo. In 2006, he was canonized among the ranks of saints in the Cathedral of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia.
