The John the Baptist Church, one of the oldest in the monastery and the city, was founded in 1754 and has suffered greatly from time and intensive use. Previously, it featured a slender bell tower and a two-story temple part with picturesque decorative embellishments and a complex silhouette line. Today, its appearance resembles an abandoned structure. However, thanks to the successful work of designers, there is now a completed project for the restoration of this unique monument of Ural Baroque.

More than 250 years ago, Ural industrialist and church builder Maxim Pokhodyashin commissioned a building with a bell tower about 50 meters high, reminiscent of the bell tower of the Trinity Cathedral. It had a truncated tent above the ringing arches, topped with a smaller bell tower with an onion dome. Above the roof of the bell tower rose an octagonal volume of the tent. This innovative solution may have been related to the architect's desire to create a unique architectural dominant in Verkhoturye. As a result, the church acquired a distinctive compositional solution.

In the second half of the 1940s, the upper floor, damaged by fire, was dismantled. Currently, the church is represented only by the lower tier with losses of architectural forms and destruction of load-bearing structures.

To restore the lost parts of the building, bell tower, square base, domes, and other details, extensive research has been conducted. The project has been recreated based on photographs, historical descriptions, and preserved structures. Using descriptive geometry and computer technologies, and taking into account the dimensions of bricks and stone details, the sizes of all lost elements have been determined.

The restoration project provides for the complete restoration of the historical appearance of the John the Baptist Church of the Pokrovsky Convent. The restoration of this monument will preserve one of the most interesting branches of Ural Baroque architecture for future generations.
