Church of the Nativity of John the Baptist in Suvody

The village of Suvody is located on the Kukarsky plateau, in the western part of the Ural Mountains, among the Vyatka hills. It is surrounded by forests, but despite its remoteness, it is not the edge of civilization. Just a few dozen kilometers away is the village of Zoniha, near which lies the highest point of the Vyatka hills, 285 meters.

Although the village is small now, it was densely populated in the past. Nearby were numerous villages, the names of which have only survived on old maps. In the 18th century, these lands belonged to the Kukarsky Pokrovsky Monastery.

The first church in the settlement of "Suvotsky" was built in 1749 by decision of the peasant assembly. The Kazan bishop issued a decree for the construction of a wooden church, which was consecrated in honor of the Nativity of John the Baptist. From that moment, the Suvody parish became independent.

In 1789, a new wooden church was built in the village, and in 1829, a decision was made to construct a stone temple, which was soon realized. The area was populous, and by the mid-19th century, the parish included 40 settlements with more than 3,000 residents. Several times a year, fairs were held here. Suvody had two schools: a parish women's school and a zemstvo school, and in the surrounding villages, three educational institutions.

Such an active life continued until the early 20th century when poor harvests forced residents to migrate to Siberia.

The Precursor Church was closed in 1935, initially repurposed as a school, and in the 1980s, the dilapidated building housed a grain preparation facility for shipment to the elevator. No frescoes or traces of interior decoration remained in the church.

In today's almost deserted landscape, the temple looks picturesque and ascetic. It is beautiful and massive. I did not miss the opportunity to climb the bell tower. The stairs allowed me to do this without much effort, although at first, the darkness and narrowness of the ascent caused doubts, and I almost gave up. However, I decided to go for it and did not regret it. From the height of the bell tower, a view opened up to the horizon and endless expanses, where forested areas rise and fall, forming a dark green wall.
