The Church of John the Baptist in Belozersk, built in 1810 in the style of mature classicism, is an outstanding monument of architecture from the 18th-19th centuries. Its exquisite and austere architecture could adorn both St. Petersburg and Moscow. The complexity of the design and the mastery of execution indicate the work of a prominent metropolitan architect. Research and found drawings suggest that the project was authored by the famous architect V. I. Bazhenov.

In one of the albums stored in the A. V. Shchusev State Museum of Architecture in Moscow, a plan, facade, and section of an unknown church have been discovered, which almost completely coincide with the church in Belozersk. The differences are only in certain details, such as the transition between the church and the refectory, side porticoes, and staircases. These drawings likely served as the basis for the construction of the Church of John the Baptist, although the bell tower was never erected.

The volumetric-planning solution of the church impresses with a thoughtful play of rounded forms. The main rotundal volume with a semicircular apse is complemented by two rectangular chapels with rounded ends. The rotunda is connected to a wide refectory, which has rounded corners and is divided into three naves. Previously, the rotunda dominated the composition, topped with a high dome on a light drum with a lantern and spire.

Despite losses, the monument retains its appeal, resembling a palace structure. The chapels are adorned with four-column porticoes with pediments, while the refectory features porticoes with Ionic half-columns and decorative attics. Paired columns are located between the windows of the apse. The church windows, without frames, are divided by a cornice beam: below, rectangular with niches and sandriks, above, round with grilles. All parts of the church are united by a common entablature with a cornice, above which a metal grille of intertwined circles has partially survived.
