Church of the Nativity of Christ (Nizhnee Ablyazovo, Penza Region)

Фото 1
The Church of the Nativity of Christ, consecrated in 1724, has chapels in honor of St. Alexander of Svir and the Protection of the Holy Virgin. It is built in the style of "an octagon on a two-light square." In the refectory, there are two chapels with semicircular apses that adjoin the western corners of the square, and the main altar is also semicircular in shape. The two-tiered tent bell tower has an "octagon on a square" design. The church's decor actively incorporates elements of ancient Russian architecture, such as kokoshniks, cityscapes, curb stones, and columns. The architecture of the church represents a provincial interpretation of "Naryshkin Baroque." The interior decoration of the church deserves special attention. One of the outstanding works of monumental decorative art from the second half of the 18th century is the five-tiered iconostasis, adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures. Among the sculptures, the group "Descent of the Holy Spirit" stands out, located on the Royal Doors. Also of interest is the wall composition "At the Tomb of the Lord," placed under a carved canopy.
