Tolmachyovo, a typical village in the Nizhny Novgorod region, arose on the site of an ancient Mordovian settlement and became Russian in the 16th century after Ivan the Terrible's campaigns against Kazan. Here, translators, or 'tolmachi', who spoke Russian, Mordovian, and Tatar settled. In 1848, a three-altar brick church was built in the village in honor of the Origin of the Honorable Wood of the Lord's Cross, decorated in the classical style. The other two chapels of the church are consecrated in honor of the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God and Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker. The parish included six villages. In 1937, the church was closed, and its domes were destroyed. The restoration of the church began in 1994 when local residents took on the restoration themselves. The church is recognized as a monument of history and architecture of regional significance.
