Transfiguration Church in Nerekhta

Фото 1
The Transfiguration Church is a vivid example of cult architecture in the late baroque style. This two-story stone temple was built between 1787 and 1791 on the site of the Ilyinskaya Church, which was severely damaged by a fire in Nerekhta in 1785. After that, it was decided to dismantle the old church and erect a new one. As a result of the street straightening, a triangular square was formed at the construction site, where the new temple was planned to be built. Understanding the importance of this structure for the city, the city magistrate and spiritual leadership appealed to the Bolshesolskaya town hall with a request to send the renowned architect S.A. Vorotilov to Nerekhta. In the spring of 1787, Vorotilov developed the project and began construction of the Transfiguration Church.

Like the Resurrection Church, it has two floors. On the first floor, there are two altars: in honor of the prophet Elijah and the Dormition of the Mother of God, while the upper church is consecrated in honor of the Transfiguration. The building, with its oval shape and small risalits, a slender bell tower to the west, and a light rotunda in the center, resembles metropolitan constructions. The facades are designed in the late baroque style, with window and door openings recessed in niches, decorated with profiled cornices and keystones. Unlike Vorotilov's previous works, this church does not exhibit the traditional division into a refectory, narthex, and center of the temple, although the altar is traditionally located in the east. From the west, at the first floor level, there are two entrances: to the lower church and to the white stone staircase leading to the upper church. Here, there is also a spiral staircase to the bell tower with an exit to the second floor. The interior of the winter church, with its low vaults, creates a sense of coziness, while the upper church is filled with air and light thanks to its high vaults and windows. The upper church was particularly festive due to the wall paintings and the iconostasis, which has been lost. The paintings, mostly preserved under later whitewash, were partially restored in the 1990s and early 2000s. They are executed in the late classicism style characteristic of the 1840s and include compositions such as 'The Sacrifice of Jacob' and 'The Agony in the Garden.'

In 1898, the church grounds were enclosed with a fence and gates. During the Soviet era, the top of the temple and the upper tier of the bell tower were dismantled, and the fence was demolished. From 1988 to 1991, the church was restored, and the fence was recreated according to the project of architect S.V. Demidov. The brick walls of the building are plastered and painted in two colors, highlighting the decor with whitewash. Today, the church is active.
