The parish and the wooden church of St. Paraskeva Friday are first mentioned in the land books of 1567. In the 16th century, a stone Intercession church was built with altars dedicated to St. Nicholas and Paraskeva Friday. The church stood for 117 years before being completely rebuilt. The reasons for the reconstruction were the cramped and dilapidated refectory and altars, as well as damage caused by a lightning strike in 1768. The work on dismantling the old building and constructing a new one lasted more than twenty years. Significant funds for the construction were allocated by the church elder, merchant Gordey Ivanovich Chernikov, who passed away in 1775. The new church in honor of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin with the altar of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and a bell tower was consecrated on September 28, 1790.

All the icons in the iconostasis were painted by merchant Grigory Ivanovich Belousov. In 1806, merchant Artemiy Lukyanovich Sidnev ordered silver coverings for the icons of the Lord Almighty and the Mother of God. The silver-gilded covering for the icon of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin was made with funds from merchant Ivan Ivanovich Savishev, who also donated a Gospel in a silver cover and a silver altar cross. The tin vessels of the previous church were replaced with silver ones.

In 1834, a fire occurred in the church, leaving only the walls. However, thanks to the diligence of the parishioners and voluntary donations, the church was fully restored and consecrated in 1838. At that time, a new large bell was installed in the bell tower. Since 1896, a church school operated at the church. On September 21, 1914, a hospital was consecrated at the Intercession church, the first in Tula.

The first attempt to close the Intercession church was made at the end of 1929 when the liquidation of more than ten churches in Tula was planned. Workers from local enterprises petitioned for the church to be transferred to the 'Metallist' club, but the authorities did not support their request, and the church continued to operate for more than two years. On April 26, 1932, a decision was made to close the church due to a lack of premises for educational needs. On September 14 of the same year, this decision was approved despite complaints from the faithful. The church was closed, and the bell tower was soon dismantled.

In 1961, the building of the former church housed the enterprise 'Krasny Mebelshchik'. In the late 1980s, the building was transferred to a branch of the Institute of Physics of the Earth for the placement of seismic measuring equipment. After repairs, due to the liquidation of the branch in the early 2000s, the church became abandoned.

The complex of buildings of the Intercession church, including the church, chapel, and trading shops, is a monument of history and culture of federal significance and has been under state protection since 1995. In 2009, the church came under the control of the diocese, but restoration did not begin for a long time due to problems finding an investor. In June 2017, restoration of the church and the reconstruction of the bell tower began. On June 16, 2020, a festive service was held by Lev Makhno in honor of his 80th anniversary. The consecration of the church is scheduled for October 12, 2020.
