Church of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Orenburg

In 1853, one of the most beautiful churches dedicated to the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in Orenburg. The church is located in an area of the city known as the old or pigeon Slobodka. The decision to build the church was made after a cholera epidemic in 1848. The family of the honorary citizen and first guild merchant Mikhail Stefanovich Deev miraculously escaped the disease. In gratitude to God, he approached the military governor V.A. Obruchev with a request to allow the construction of a church in the sloboda.

The laying of the church took place on April 30, 1852. Initially, the church had one altar dedicated to the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In 1857, two chapels were added to the Intercession Church and consecrated: in the name of Archangel Michael and Sergius of Radonezh.

In the 1930s, the church was closed and stripped of its domes, and its building housed carpentry and furniture workshops, as well as other productions. In 1991, the building was returned to the believers, and restoration work began. On February 23, 1992, a minor consecration of the right chapel in the name of Archangel Michael was held. Thanks to the efforts of the parishioners, benefactors, and the rector of the church, by the 160th anniversary of its consecration on December 8, 2013, the central altar in honor of the Intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary was consecrated once again.
