The Russian army needed to cross the Moksha River, but no ford was visible. Ivan the Terrible walked down the village street and met a peasant girl with buckets. He asked her to indicate a place where the river was shallower and could be crossed. The girl pointed with her long-sleeved hand towards another village. Thus, the name of the settlement, Devichiy Rukav, was born. They found a ford near a small village, and for several days the Russian host crossed the Moksha here over a stony shoal. Over time, this place became known as the village of Kamenny Brod.

The church with the altar of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin existed as early as the late 16th century. This is confirmed by the fact that even the village of Shuvalovo in the Lukoyanovsky district of the Nizhny Novgorod province, located more than 40 versts from Kamenny Brod, belonged to the parish of the Kamenny Brod church. Another confirmation that the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin remained the only one in the area for a long time is found in a church charter, which records the decision of the head of the Penza diocese, Viktor, to build a new church to replace the old one.

According to an inscription in the church Gospel, in the early 18th century, the priest at the Intercession church was Arseniy Semyonov, who was later succeeded by a peasant's son, Father Stefan. The names of other clergymen, Elisei Ivanov and Ivan Ivanov, are known thanks to a deed of land donation from 1765. According to legend, two brothers who were priests served in the same parish until the end of their days. It was the Ivanovs who collected funds among the parishioners and built the new church.

The construction of the new church in Kamenny Brod began in 1778. A stone church with an iron roof was being built instead of a wooden one. The temple, 29 arshins long and 10 arshins wide, had two altars. The main altar, named in memory of the old church in honor of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin, was unheated, while the side altar, in honor of Saint Nicholas, was heated in winter. The new church was consecrated on March 22, 1784, and the names of all builders and donors were entered into the church synod.

In the construction of the church, besides the residents of Kamenny Brod, the inhabitants of the Russian villages of Butyrka, Ureysky Vyselok, Malaya Sofyevka, as well as the Mordvins from the villages of Melsany, Maly Urkat, Polochino, Bolshoy Urkati, and Kirzhemany participated. They formed the parish of the new Kamenny Brod church. Until 1830, the parish included the residents of the village of Akcheyeva and the village of Russkiye Poshaty, as well as the previously mentioned village of Shuvalovo.

Since 1800, the priest of the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin was Lukillian Ivanov, the son of Ioann Ivanov. His son Vasily Ivanov also served in the Kamenny Brod church his entire life and was dismissed in 1847 due to old age. From 1847, the duties of the priest of the Intercession church were performed by Alexander Afanasyev Primerov. According to A. Primerov, at the end of the 18th century, the parish of the Kamenny Brod church numbered 278 households.
