In the village of Baltai, a wooden two-altar church with a bell tower was built in 1864, which had an altar dedicated to Saint Prince Alexander Nevsky. The church was served by a priest and a psalmist, and the houses for the clergy belonged to the church. There were male and female parish schools operating at the church.

Before the revolution, the church was rebuilt in stone with six domes and a bell tower nearly 70 meters tall. In the late 1920s, the church was destroyed. Initially, it was planned to use the stones for building new houses, but due to the strength of the masonry, only large blocks unsuitable for construction could be broken from the walls. These remnants were used to pave the road from the entrance to Baltai to the center of the village. A school was built on the site of the church, and a park was laid out on the site of the cemetery.

In 1991, with the blessing of Archbishop Pimen Khmelevsky of Saratov and Volsk, an Orthodox parish was established in Baltai. Due to the lack of a place for worship, services were initially held in the foyer of a cinema, and later in the building of the former Pioneer House.

On November 16, 1997, with the blessing of Archbishop Alexander Timofeev of Saratov and Volsk, Archpriest Alexander Tkachev, along with the clergy, laid the foundation of the new church.

In 2003, a stone church was built in the village, the altar of which, as in the pre-revolutionary church, was consecrated in honor of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin. The first service took place on October 14, 2003, on the feast day of the church. On October 18, 2003, with the blessing of Bishop Longin of Saratov and Volsk, the rite of placing the Antimension was performed.
