Church of St. Paraskeva Friday in Sergiev Posad

Initially, there was a wooden Introduction Church with a chapel of the martyr Paraskeva on Podol, presumably built in the 15th century. It served as a parish church for the monastery's servants and officials managing the monastery's estate. Later, a men's monastery dependent on the monastery of St. Sergius emerged here. In 1547, with funds from the Trinity Monastery and benefactors, the Friday Church was built.

After the Polish-Lithuanian siege of 1608 and 1610, according to hieromonk Arseny, the Trinity Monastery "healed the wounds" of the Podol Monastery. In 1611, the Friday Church was restored and consecrated.

According to a description from 1641, outside the city was a monastery with a stone church of the Introduction of the Mother of God, covered with slate, with a dome and cross made of German iron. A warm church of the great martyr Paraskeva Friday with a refectory, also stone and covered with slate, is also mentioned. The monastery had thirteen cells for the elders.

Over time, the monastery fell into decline and was abolished. From Great Lent in 1679, the church became the parish church of the Lower Sluzhnaya sloboda. It is likely that a new Friday Church was built around the same time.

In 1928, the Church of St. Paraskeva Friday on Podol was closed. On June 1, 1929, the building was handed over to the "Smychka" cooperative for storage, which led to its dilapidated state. Only in the 1960s, when the church was transferred to the Zagorsk Museum-Reserve, did restoration work begin. It turned out that the Friday Church dates back to the second half of the 17th century. However, the question of whether it was rebuilt or constructed anew remains open.

In 1991, the Zagorsk Museum transferred the church to the Lavra.

The church of the great martyr Paraskeva Friday, located north of the Introduction Church, is a traditional three-part temple resembling a ship. It consists of a square church with a semicircular apse, a square refectory, and a bell tower, connected along the east-west axis. The church is rectangular, without pillars, with a vaulted ceiling and an onion-shaped dome. The bell tower, an octagon on a square base, rests on two pylons and the western wall of the refectory, which has a staircase.

The Friday Church is richly decorated. Its walls are divided by pilasters into three parts and topped with zakomaras with niches and a cornice. The windows of the church and refectory are framed with architraves in the shape of kokoshniks. The entrance portal is adorned with geometric carvings. The bell tower is decorated with numerous elements.

Thus, the Friday Church, with its volumes strung along a horizontal axis, differs from the majestic Introduction Church. While the architecture of the latter combines ancient and later elements, the Friday Church represents a cohesive monument of the 17th century, preserving its original appearance and corresponding to the tastes of the local population.
