Until 1917, the village of Strigay was part of the Volsky district. In 1824, a stone single-altar Nikolsky church was built here, funded by the parishioners. The church was consecrated in 1832 by an archbishop. There was one priest and one psalmist serving at the church, and the land under the church comprised 49.5 desyatinas of arable and hay land. The distance from the church to the district city of Volsk was 90 versts, and to the local dean, 55 versts.

In 1907, also thanks to the efforts of the parishioners, a new stone church with a bell tower was built in the village of Strigay. This single-altar church was consecrated in honor of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. The clergy included a priest and a psalmist, and public houses were provided for them. Two church-parish schools operated in the parish. However, during the Soviet years, the church was closed and desecrated, the interior was lost, and the roof collapsed.

In the early 1990s, at the initiative of the believers, an Orthodox parish in honor of the Protection of the Holy Virgin was registered in the village. In 1999, thanks to the efforts of the rector, Father Valery Koroteev, a prayer house was opened. On May 24, 1999, with the blessing of Archbishop Alexander of Saratov and Volsk, the rite of placing the Antimension was performed in the church, equipped in a repurposed space, after which regular services began in the village.
