St. Nicholas Church in Elizaryevo

Фото 1
The stone church in the village of Elizaryevo was built in 1820 thanks to the efforts of Countess S. A. Tolstaya and her daughter, who was married to Zakrevskaya. The "Chronicle of the Serafimo-Diveevo Monastery" mentions that the countess visited the community at the Kazan church in Diveevo and, sympathizing with their dire situation, gifted them a small plot of her land. The single-altar church was adorned with frescoes created by students of the Stupin art school. These frescoes are unique both in technique and biblical themes.

Two roads lead to the church, as before: one from Arzamas to Diveevo and Sarov, the other from Arzamas through the villages of Orekhovets, Onuchino, Berezino, Ivanovskoye, and Kruglye Pany. From the hill near the village of Kruglye Pany, the Nicholas church in Elizaryevo is particularly noticeable, bringing joy to pilgrims.

In the 1930s, the church in Elizaryevo was closed, and the rector, Father Yakov, was repeatedly arrested. On November 20, 1937, he was detained right in the church and, not allowed to return home, was sent to the Arzamas prison. On the same day, his younger brother, Priest Mikhail, was shot in Gorky, who was included in the Assembly of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia in 2001. Four days later, on November 24, an indictment was signed, and the case was referred to the troika of the NKVD for the Gorky region. On December 2, a sentence was passed: to be shot and have property confiscated. The protocol states that Father Yakov was shot in Gorky on December 26, 1937.

On July 30, 2003, at a meeting of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, the name of the holy martyr Yakov Gusev was included in the Assembly of New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia of the 20th century from the Nizhny Novgorod diocese.

Since 1991, the Nicholas church in Elizaryevo has been reopened for parishioners. A long process of restoration has begun, which continues to this day. On February 10, 2006, Archbishop Georgy of Nizhny Novgorod and Arzamas performed the consecration of the church.
