The parish in the village of Malaia Purga, Malopurgin volost of the Sarapul district, was founded in 1858 by the decree of the Holy Synod. Initially, services were held in a prayer house. By the end of 1860, the first wooden church with two domes was built in the village, consecrated in honor of the Archangel Michael.

In 1902, a stone church with one altar was built on the site of the old wooden church. The first stone was laid in 1897, but construction faced significant delays due to the dire situation of the parishioners and the empty church treasury. The rector, Father Michael, was forced to leave the parish and move to the village of Debesy. In 1898, he was succeeded by Ioann Vasilyev, who spoke the Udmurt language. He organized the production of bricks using egg white and yolk as a binder. The construction was supported by donations from the merchants of Elabuga, I. G. Stakheev and F. P. Girbasov. By June 1902, the church was completed and consecrated on January 3 in honor of Archangel Michael. After Ioann, the rector became Alexander Nagorny, a graduate of the Vyatka Theological Seminary.

The church became a decoration of the village, its architecture and fence were executed in a new style. The outer walls were adorned with ornaments and artistic masonry. Two large and ten small bells were installed, the largest weighing 36 poods and audible for six versts.

Since 1917, with the arrival of Soviet power, the church faced persecution, and parishioners and church clergy were repressed. The Church of Archangel Michael was closed twice: in March 1930, when the church was destroyed, the iconostasis was ruined, and the icons were shattered, and in June 1938, when the building was repurposed as a forge and later as a shop.

Since 1990, the church began to revive. Built on the outskirts, it found itself in the center of the village. In 1998, the first rector was Father Anatoly from Moscow, who restored the porch and bell tower, as well as the dome with seven domes. Necessary items for services were acquired, and a multi-voiced choir was created.

In 2008, a Board of Trustees for the Church of Archangel Michael in the village of Malaia Purga was established to assist in the repair and improvement of the territory under the head of the municipal formation 'Malopurgin District.'
