Church of Archangel Michael in Krasnye Klyuchi

Фото 1
Krasnye Klyuchi, an ancient Erzya settlement located on the border of Samara and Orenburg regions. The historical name of this place is Arkhangelskiye Klyuchi. There are indeed many springs in the vicinity, but the settlement got its name thanks to a spring located near the Church of Archangel Michael. The word "krasnye" was added to the name during the Soviet era.

The first church in Klyuchi was built in the mid-18th century, shortly after the settlement was founded. A hundred years later, it fell into disrepair, and the residents constructed a new church, which has survived to this day. It is also wooden but differs in strength and beauty. According to the design, it is a typical Volga region ship-shaped church, where the bell tower is connected to the church by a refectory. Usually, such churches have one dome, but the Church of Archangel Michael in Krasnye Klyuchi is adorned with five domes. Unique carved window frames, handcrafted, give the church a special expressiveness.

The interior decoration of the church has almost completely retained its original appearance. Pilgrims admire the ancient wooden carved iconostasis, which contains 53 icons from the 19th century. The church survived thanks to the parishioners who defended it in the 1930s. Knowing about the possible destruction, they guarded the church around the clock. Twice, delegations from the village traveled to Moscow to see Mikhail Kalinin, asking to preserve the shrine. Perhaps due to the persistence of the residents or a miracle, the church remained untouched while other churches in the Volga region were destroyed. Services were interrupted for only five years, and even during that time, the church remained intact.

Pilgrims come to the settlement in the northeast of the Samara region year-round. People with health problems strive to come here to immerse themselves in the spring of Archangel Michael, which is considered miraculous, as documented. The water from this spring is not only healing but also tasty due to its high silver content. Another reason for the fame of Krasnye Klyuchi is the preservation of the relics of Elder Peter Chagrinskiy, canonized in 2000 as a locally revered Samara saint. The relics are located in the church in an open reliquary under a carved wooden canopy.
