Until recently, there were several versions regarding the age of the Church of Saint Archistrategos Michael. The well-known Ukrainian local historian of the 19th century, Leontiy Pokhylevych, dated the Dorohynka church to the year 1600 in his records. Later, dates of 1700 and 1751 appeared in literature, which, however, were based on biased or unreliable archival sources.

To clarify this issue, the Institute of Geochemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was involved. Specialists conducted radiocarbon analysis of the wood beams from which the church was built. The result was astonishing: 1528!

Therefore, it is not surprising that the church retains ancient, archaic features. Similar wooden churches likely first appeared on Ukrainian soil during the time of Saint Equal-to-the-Apostles Volodymyr the Great or even earlier, during the reigns of princes Askold and Dyr. Old Ukrainian engravings and drawings often depict such structures, three-part, with four-pitched roofs and a low "overhang," a circular canopy against rain and snow.

The Church of Saint Archistrategos Michael is the oldest of the surviving wooden churches in Central, Eastern, and Southern Ukraine.

The church survived the bishopric when, in the 18th century, it, along with the village, belonged to a Roman Catholic bishop. It is known that in 1751, under the Poles, the church underwent major renovations. The same was done in 1852, funded by the state services of the Russian Empire. At that time, the deacon's house, sacristy, and narthex were also completed.

The old bell tower was dismantled, and its image has been preserved in a drawing by the Ukrainian ethnographer of French origin, Dominique Pierre de la Flize. A new wooden bell tower was built separately from the church.

In the second half of the 19th century, the church belonged to the "poor" 5th category, meaning it had about five hundred parishioners.

By the early 1960s, the church was closed and doomed to destruction. Judging by photographs from those years, this would have happened if not for the establishment of the Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine in Kyiv. The team of the largest open-air museum in the world effectively saved the church.

In 1971, it was relocated to a new site, quickly assembled, and restored to its original appearance. The iconostasis was also restored. Painted in the style of Ukrainian Baroque by unknown icon painters of the Kyiv school between 1690 and the 1750s, carved from linden, silvered, and gilded, it is a true masterpiece. The exquisite royal gates and four local images stand out in the iconostasis, unmatched in the famous icon collections of Kyiv, Lviv, and Lutsk.

On March 10, 1990, Father Mephodiy Andrushchenko, a priest of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, conducted the first service in the restored church.
