The cathedral in honor of St. Macarius was built in 1670 and consecrated in 1671 under the abbess Nikita, who preceded the saint and miracle worker Mitrophan, the first bishop of Voronezh. Mitrophan was the abbot of this monastery from 1675 to 1682. In 1824, two chapels were added to the church in place of the refectory, dedicated to the Holy Parents Joachim and Anna, as well as to Archangel Michael and other incorporeal powers. The construction of the Macarius Cathedral was accompanied by the discovery of the incorrupt relics of St. Macarius 227 years after his death.
