Church of the Korsun Icon of the Mother of God in Uglich

Фото 1
The church was built in 1730. The central altar is consecrated in honor of the Korsun Icon of the Mother of God, while the side altar is dedicated to St. Macarius of Egypt, in memory of the former monastery. The church was closed in 1942, and in 1972 it was restored under the guidance of the famous restorer of the Yaroslavl region, S.E. Novikov. Services resumed on May 1, 1994. In 1996, with the blessing of Archbishop Mikhail, the relics of John Chepolosov were brought to the church, and in 2002, the church was given the Korsun Icon of the Mother of God.

In ancient times, possibly in the 13th century, during the reign of Prince Roman of Uglich, a monastery of St. Macarius of Egypt was founded on the northwestern outskirts of the settlement, on an earthen rampart and the steep bank of the Selivanovsky stream. It served both as a defensive outpost for the city and as a spiritual safeguard. During the Polish invasion in the Time of Troubles, the monastery was destroyed and was not restored. In its memory, a wooden tent-roofed Protection Church with a side altar of Macarius of Egypt was built on this site. A miraculous icon of the Korsun Mother of God was found among the ruins of the monastery, which became especially venerated in the church. In the first half of the 18th century, when the earthen rampart no longer existed, it was decided to build a stone church on the site of the wooden one. The main altar was dedicated to the Korsun Icon of the Mother of God, and the side altar to Macarius of Egypt.

The church is distinguished by its elegance. It consists of the church part, the refectory, and the bell tower, all built on one axis. The five domes on high slender drums give it an upward aspiration, characteristic of many earlier Uglich churches. The four-tiered bell tower, built after the model of the cathedral bell tower in the Uglich Kremlin, impresses with its tall pillar and round platform in the ringing tier, along with two tiers of completion topped with a small dome.

The church was the last to be closed in 1942. For several years, along with the Church of Dmitry 'on the field', it remained the only beacon of Orthodoxy in the ancient city. It is symbolic that it was the first to be opened in 1994, marking the beginning of the revival of local Orthodox culture. Unfortunately, the interior decoration has not survived, but externally the church looks as bright and festive as before, welcoming guests arriving from the direction of Yaroslavl.
