The name of the village Stepanovo, now known as Stepanikha, is associated with its founder, Stepan, the grandson of the Chernigov nobleman Fyodor Byakont, who moved to Moscow lands after Batu's invasion. Stepan founded a settlement here, which eventually became the village of Stepanikha. In 1671, a wooden church dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker was built here. In 1772, a new church was erected on the site of the old one, which was consecrated in 1773 in honor of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. The current stone church was built in 1839 with funds from merchant V.T. Sobolev, replacing the wooden one. The church has three altars: the main one in the refectory, Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, and Saint Martyr Basil of Herson. It is popularly known as the Kazan and Nikolskaya church. This is a five-domed church with decor in the style of late classicism. In the 1930s, the church was closed, and the bell tower was destroyed.
