The first mentions of the Ilyinsky temple can be found in the land registry book of 1627, which speaks of two wooden churches standing side by side in the Old Posad: the Nikolskaya and Ilyinskaya. It is noted that there was no singing in the Ilyinskaya church. By the end of the 17th century, the temple had fallen into disrepair, and it was replaced with a new wooden building, which included a Nikolsky chapel in memory of the closed Nikolskaya church. This Ilyinskaya church functioned until the early 19th century, when it was rebuilt in stone. The funds for the construction were provided by merchant Dmitry Kakushkin and his sons. The work lasted for decades: the Sorrowful chapel was consecrated in 1820, the main altar in 1848, and the Nikolsky chapel in 1858. The three-tiered bell tower was built later, in 1866.

Considering the chronology, it can be assumed that this is an Empire-style temple with a powerful rotunda on a square base, decorated with triangular pediments and rustication. The rotunda has 12 semi-circular windows, symbolizing the 12 apostles and the 12 months of the year. During the Soviet era, the Ilyinsky temple remained active until 1941, when it was looted and closed. The building was used as a warehouse, and later it was abandoned. By 2002, when the temple was handed over to a new Orthodox community, it was in a deplorable state. The church, standing on a high hill and visible from afar, was deteriorating. Trees were growing on the roof, the roofing was leaking, the walls were covered with cracks, bricks were missing in places, trash was everywhere, and grass and bushes had overgrown around it. Since 2003, services have resumed in the church, while renovation work is being carried out in the building and on the bell tower. The territory is gradually being improved, and the church fence is being restored.
