Church of Elijah the Prophet in Ivanovsk

Фото 1
The wooden church that stands now was built in 2004 on the site of the church of Elijah the Prophet, which was destroyed in 1960. The stone church, built in 1832, replaced two tent-like churches. The construction of the Church of Elijah the Prophet in the village of Ivanovsk began in 1811, as confirmed by the church foundation charter. After 21 years, in 1832, the construction was completed. The church had two altars, one of which was consecrated in honor of the great martyr Demetrius of Thessalonica.

According to legends, the history of the first church's creation in Ivanovsk on Lehta is unusual: it was initially planned to be built in another location, a mile from the current site. However, at night, all the construction materials miraculously moved to where the church stands now. The surprised builders decided to erect the church precisely in Ivanovsk.

According to data from the 1880s, about 10 villages with a population of 697 men and 840 women belonged to the parish of the Church of Elijah the Prophet. In 1911, the bell tower was rebuilt and increased by one tier, and an altar in the name of the Nativity of Christ was arranged. A church parish school operated at the church, located in the watchman's lodge.

On October 26, 1937, the rector of the church, Alexey Sokolov, was arrested and sentenced for anti-Soviet activities along with other priests, sentenced to execution, and on November 3, the sentence was carried out. Despite protests from parishioners, the church was closed. The winter part of the building was turned into a grain storage, while the summer part became a club where films were shown, and a stage was set up in the altar. The walls inside were painted gray.

The modern church was built thanks to the efforts of benefactors A.S. Ignatiev and V.S. Martyshev, following the examples of ancient Russian architecture. The interior decoration of the church is also being recreated in an ancient style. The royal gates, carved from wood, are modeled after the gates of the church in Ishne from the 17th century, the iconostasis is created in the style of the Rostov icon from the 16th century, the domes are covered with aspen shingles, and the ridges of the refectory and altar complete the roofs. The sky in the church is designed based on measurements of northern churches from the 17th century. The architecture of the current Ivanovsk church is connected with wooden architecture of Moscow Rus in the 17th century. The church consists of three parts connected by a common longitudinal axis. Two differently sized parts, the altar and the refectory, adjoin the cubic mass of the square, united into a single architectural organism. The only difference from ancient buildings is the presence of a foundation and the constructed 'sky.'
