The church was built in 1725, and its last reconstruction took place in 1836. The interior of the Jacob's church of the Spaso-Yakovlevsky Dimitriev Monastery was painted in the late 1830s by the artist Timofey Medvedev, who was born in the village of Teykovo in the Ivanovo district and was a serf of the Golitsyn princes. In his works, the pictorial techniques of mature classicism are remarkably combined with a bright color palette and rich light-shadow modeling of baroque. This is especially noticeable in the ceilings, executed with a wide compositional sweep and rich decorative imagination.

In the altar conch, the artist skillfully depicted the "New Testament Trinity," surrounded by a wreath of singing angels. The composition "Rejoice in You" on the vault of the central church looks unusual: at the zenith of the vault, the Virgin Mary is depicted on a throne, while on the four slopes, multi-figure groups of apostles, kings, martyrs, and saints are presented. The painting of the "Last Judgment" on the vault of the refectory is broad and bold, based on a circular principle.

The wall paintings, including the "Crucifixion with Attendants" in the altar, "Agony in the Garden" and "Exodus of the Jews from Egypt" in the central cube, as well as scenes from the life of Saint Jacob in the refectory, were updated in the late 19th century, but currently, a significant part has been lost, as well as the paintings of the small porch.

The composition of the oval dome on the upper floor of the church, where the monastery's sacristy was located, is original. The interior of the sacristy is illuminated by the soft light of a large northern window. The dome painting is done in light transparent tones in the grisaille technique. In the center of the dome, against a pale azure background, four monumental figures of the evangelists are depicted, imitating the sculptures of the masters of the High Renaissance. Between them are four medallions with painted scenes: "Annunciation," "Christ in the Temple," and "Justification of the Sinner by St. Jacob." Below runs an ornamental frieze, imitating stucco and consisting of interwoven leaves of acanthus, oak, and clusters of grapes.
