The George Church is first mentioned in the land books of Prince Peter Voeykov in 1627, where it is stated that there was a wooden church in Pushkarskaya Sloboda. It may have suffered from a fire or become dilapidated, as it is no longer mentioned in documents from 1676. Historians believe that the George Church was the first founded by Russians in Kasimov. According to popular legend, there were once dense forests at the site of the church's construction, where a hermit lived. The forest animals disturbed his prayers, and he promised to build a church in honor of St. George the Great Martyr, who had saved him from wolves more than once. This hermit built the church on a burial mound. The existence of this church is commemorated by the George Chapel in the Epiphany Church, built in the 17th century in the same sloboda. The Epiphany Church was referred to as George-Epiphany. Initially, it was wooden, but in 1700, merchant Irodion Ilyin Gagin and the parishioners built a stone Epiphany Church. It had three chapels: in honor of the Epiphany of the Lord and St. George, in the refectory, in the name of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and the Venerable Zosimas and Savvatiy of Solovki. In 1702, Peter the Great visited Kasimov and was impressed by the location of the city and the church. He issued a charter for the lands, which was later lost. It is believed that there may have been an Epiphany Monastery at the site of the church, as the icon of the Epiphany of the Lord could have been transferred to the church from the monastery. Initially, the Epiphany Church was a simple square building, but it was almost completely renovated in 1816. In 1871, the refectory was rebuilt, and in 1873, a new iconostasis was installed in the Zosimo-Savvatiy Chapel, and in 1882, in the George Chapel. The iconostasis in the Epiphany Chapel was massive and decorated with ancient icons. Among the ancient monuments was a Gospel from 1657. A stone with an inscription about the baptism of Gorodets by St. Prince Gleb Vladimirovich has been preserved at the church. Behind the altar of the George Church, according to stories, lies the jester of Peter I, Balakirev, to whom the tsar gifted an estate in the Kasimov district. In 1922, valuables were seized from the church to assist the Volga region, and later for a museum. On March 9, 1939, it was decided to close and demolish the Epiphany Church, although such a resolution had already been made in 1937. The clergy tried to preserve the property, for which they were threatened with prosecution. The church was closed, and the building was handed over to a leather factory. Currently, the main chapel is consecrated in honor of the Epiphany of the Lord and St. George the Great Martyr, and the left one, on May 12, 1994, in honor of the Venerable Zosimas and Savvatiy of Solovki.
