Church of Flora and Lavra in Frolovskoye Cemetery

Фото 1
The monument belongs to the archaizing direction in architecture, characteristic of the region and oriented towards pre-Petrine architecture of the 17th century. The church is beautifully situated on a hill, at the foot of which flows a stream. Unfortunately, the village itself has not survived, and the nearest settlement is the village of Berendeev. The church with an altar was built around 1745 with funds from Ivan Semyonovich Shokorov. In 1810, it was repaired by the master Semyon Sergeevich Trubnikov from Bolshesol, who updated the roof and the domes above the church and altar. The altar of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was likely added in the mid-19th century. By this time, the door on the northern facade and the canopy above it, as well as the cemetery fence around the church, may date.

The composition of the church is asymmetrical relative to the longitudinal axis. Its core consists of a five-domed square with blind cylindrical drums. The lower semicircular apse is somewhat narrower than the square. The rectangular refectory on the northern side continues the wall of the church, while to the south, the altar with a semicircular apse adjoins it. Until the end of the 20th century, the refectory and altar were combined under a common gable roof. The bell tower, located along the axis of the church and refectory, has a common wall with the refectory on the first tier. The second tier is an octagonal pillar with a tent and an onion-shaped dome. The square of the church is framed by a cornice with a sawtooth band and wide pilasters at the corners. The symmetrical southern and northern facades are pierced with openings with arched lintels. The windows, recessed in the quarters, are decorated with framed casings with semicircular sandriks. The forms and decor of the church are repeated in the apse, refectory, and altar. A brick staircase to the upper tier of the bell tower is arranged in the western wall of the refectory, with entrances both from the outside and from the inside. The church has partially preserved glue paintings from the late 18th century, updated with oil in the early 20th century. The composition of the "Last Judgment" is presented in traditional iconography. The time of updating corresponds to the polychrome ornament in the vault of the arch between the church and the apse, as well as the composition of the "Transfiguration" on the vault of the refectory. Currently, the domes of the church have been lost, the vault of the refectory has partially collapsed, the interior decoration has not survived, and the fence has been dismantled from the south, north, and east. The fence that remains along the western boundary of the church-cemetery territory is a low blind wall with a gable top.
