Church of the Bogolubskaya Icon of the Mother of God in Sergiev Posad

On the banks of the Skit ponds, away from noisy roads and deep in the forests, near the Gethsemane Chernigov Skit of the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra, in a place known as Korbukh, in 1858, the blessed schemamonk Philip founded the Bogolubskaya Kinovia. The word "kinovia" comes from Greek and means "communal living".

Initially, a two-story church was built with two altars: on the lower floor in honor of the holy women Matrona and Capitolina, and on the upper floor, in honor of the Bogolubskaya Icon of the Mother of God. In this quiet and peaceful place, a cemetery for the brethren of the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra was arranged next to the church. Schemamonk Philip was buried in the lower church, but several years ago his remains were transferred to the Iveron chapel of the Skit caves. Over time, the Kinovia grew and became a large communal monastery. Five wooden cell buildings were constructed for the brethren, one of which was three stories high. Outside the enclosure, there was a wooden building for the guesthouse and its own cattle yard. In 1875, a two-story stone refectory building was erected on the western side of the monastery. Between the church and the refectory, the Holy Gates were built, the main entrance to the territory of the Kinovia. To reach the gates, pilgrims crossed the bay of the skit pond via a wooden bridge and climbed a steep staircase built on the hillside. In 1907, the Kinovia was surrounded by a stone fence 250 fathoms long.

Unfortunately, in the 1920s, even these remote places did not escape persecution against the Church. Most of the Kinovia's buildings and the necropolis were destroyed, and the gravestones were used for paving the road. The Kinovia was closed after the revolution on May 2, 1922, and all valuables, icons, and church utensils were confiscated and transferred to the fund for famine relief. Later, the territory of the monastery was handed over to a sewing factory.

To this day, only the stone single-domed church in the old Russian style with a tent-shaped bell tower has survived, which has recently been returned to the jurisdiction of the Russian Orthodox Church. Now, much effort is needed to restore the surviving part of the once-flourishing holy monastery of Bogolubskaya.
