Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Nerekhta

Фото 1
The whitewashed brick church in Nerekhta is one of the oldest surviving monuments of cult architecture, built in the traditions of the pre-Petrine 17th century. It is located slightly set back from the street, with its southern facade facing it. The church was built in the 18th century on the site of a wooden temple. Between 1713 and 1716, the northern chapel of Athanasius and Cyril of Alexandria was erected, followed by the church itself with the refectory. Both structures had a tiered composition of the type octagon on a square, with the church crowned by five domes. Around 1772, the refectory with the chapel of George was either rebuilt or newly constructed, and at that time, a three-tiered bell tower with a bell-shaped top was built according to the design of architect S.A. Vorotilov. In the 19th century, the facades of the refectory were remodeled, possibly at that time the southern porch was added, and the church grounds were enclosed by a stone fence with an iron grille and gates opposite the bell tower. In the 1930s, the fence was destroyed, five domes of the church with cylindrical drums were ruined, the three-part altar with semicircular apses, the octagon, and the semicircular apse of the northern chapel, as well as the bell tower. Many openings were bricked up or altered, the ceiling in the church was covered, and the interior decoration did not survive.

The asymmetric composition includes a church of the type octagon on a square, a rectangular northern chapel that completely covers the facade of the square, and a rectangular refectory with a southern chapel, the semicircular apse of which partially obscures the facade of the church. The volumes of the church are adorned with sawtooth bands, the corners of the square are treated with pilasters, and the octagon features three-quarter columns with necking. The rectangular windows of both tiers are framed with decorative surrounds. The openings of the octagon, which are more elongated, are topped with semicircular kokoshniks. The northwestern face of the octagon is distinguished by an almost square false window with an octagonal panel. A wide semicircular kokoshnik is laid out on the blind eastern face. One of the windows of the northern chapel has retained a three-part top made of semicircular kokoshniks. The entrance to the chapel on the western facade was converted into a window and had a portal. The facade of the southern chapel is pierced by five windows with architrave lintels marked by wedge-shaped locks. Above them hang profiled sandriks, and above that runs an entablature.

The column-free space of the church is covered by an eight-section vaulted ceiling. The transition from the square to the octagon is achieved with stepped trompes. Three narrow openings connected the church with the apse, and a wide arched opening leads to the refectory. The refectory and the southern chapel form a single one-column chamber, with four supporting arches and a vault resting on the central octagonal pillar. The altar of the southern chapel contains a conch, while the northern chapel has a flat ceiling.
