The village was originally called Zinyakovo and was part of the Semyonovsky district of the Nizhny Novgorod province, being part of the Durnovo estates. The address book of the Nizhny Novgorod diocese for 1904 states that the wooden church was built in 1765. The main altar is dedicated to Saint Alexius, Metropolitan of Moscow, and the warm chapel to Saint John Chrysostom. The land area was about 32 desyatins, of which 4 desyatins were occupied by forest. The priest had his own house, and the psalmist lived in an apartment. The state salary was 392 rubles, and other capital was 150 rubles. The parish counted 24 houses, 622 Orthodox men and 748 women, as well as 11 men and 11 women Old Believers. A church-parish school operated in the village. The rector was Priest Peter Sergeyevich Speransky, 55 years old, who graduated from seminary and had served since 1889. The psalmist V.I. Nikolsky, 36 years old, graduated from the 3rd grade of the spiritual school and had served since 1892. The church elder was N.A. Medvedev.

The stone church was built from 1900 to 1913, presumably according to the design of architect A.K. Nikitin. On September 22, 1913, the central altar was consecrated in the name of Saint Alexius, Metropolitan of Moscow. The side chapels were dedicated to Saint John Chrysostom and Saint Nicholas the Wonderworker, but by 1914 they had not yet been consecrated. The last rector before the church's closure was Peter Sergeyevich's son, Sergey Petrovich Speransky.

During the Soviet era, the church was used as a warehouse. The church is currently active.

The church is located in the center of the village of Zinyaki, facing its western facade towards the main square and its eastern side towards the village cemetery. The Alexius Church has a symmetrical axial layout: along the west-east axis are the narthex, the church part, and the altar.

The church was built with a three-tiered stone bell tower above the narthex, square in plan, with a massive cylindrical drum and a large onion-shaped dome. The bell tower and the original false drums with domes were destroyed after 1936. In the 1990s, the drums and domes of the church were restored with changes to proportions and decor.

The church dominates the surrounding landscape and is of interest as a sample of a stone rural church from the early 20th century in eclectic style.
