In Nice, there are about two hundred hotels, but one of them is especially dear to Russians. This is the small hotel "Oasis," located at 23 Gounod Street, painted in a pleasant yellow color. In the late 19th century, there was the "Russian Boarding House," where for a modest fee, one could find cozy accommodation, delicious food, and the company of compatriots.

Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was one of the boarders at this boarding house for several years. Due to progressing tuberculosis, he was forced to spend the cold months in places with a mild climate. The "Russian Boarding House" offered comfortable and inexpensive lodging: it was a 15-minute walk to the sea, and the cost of a room was about 10 francs. For breakfast and lunch, familiar dishes such as borscht and pies were served.

Judging by Chekhov's letters, he enjoyed his time in Nice: he admired the mild climate, walked along the Promenade des Anglais, read newspapers, and savored the sea air. The writer was pleased to be able to walk in October without a coat and in a straw hat. Although during one of his visits he worked on the play "Three Sisters," the creative process at the resort was slow, and Chekhov felt boredom from idleness.

Today, a memorial plaque and a bas-relief commemorating Anton Pavlovich Chekhov's stay are installed on the facade of the former "Russian Boarding House."
