Chapel of the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God in Belgorod

Фото 1
The chapel in honor of the Pochaev Icon of the Mother of God was built in the center of the Memory Park in Belgorod. This park became the burial site for more than two and a half thousand residents of the city, brutally killed by Nazi occupiers between 1941 and 1943. The chapel was consecrated on August 4, 1996.

During the occupation of Belgorod, the fascists used the park to create trenches, bunkers, and machine gun positions. When the front line moved away from the city, the park turned into a site for the execution of local residents who resisted. In the post-war years, many mass graves were discovered in this area, in which, according to some sources, about two and a half thousand people are buried.
