Nizhny Novgorod residents come to the legendary Baranov spring for water not only on Epiphany but throughout the year. On weekends, so many people gather here that a line forms at the spring. The spring was mentioned as far back as the 19th century. The chronicle of the village of Bolshoye Borisovo states that a merchant named Baranov, who fell ill and went blind, saw the Virgin Mary in a dream, who pointed him to the place where he could regain his sight by washing with the water. And so it happened. In gratitude, the merchant built the Life-Giving Spring chapel.

In the last century, the chapel was destroyed, but it was restored in 2000. The story of its restoration is also unusual. A memorial plaque on the chapel wall reads: 'Recreated in memory of Olga Lvovna Dmitrieva' along with the date. Olga was 31 years old when she passed away. Many who visited the spring wondered what lay behind these dry dates. Olga, having once visited the site of the destroyed chapel, decided to restore it. Together with her relatives, she approached Metropolitan Nikolai and began construction. Olga passed away in September, and in October, the chapel was opened. Her husband, a businessman from Nizhny Novgorod, completed the work she started. It is always clean and well-kept here, and fresh flowers, roses and white chrysanthemums, are placed at the memorial plaque year-round.
