In February 1987, at the initiative of the Chanovsky District Committee of the Communist Party, a large meeting was held with the participation of veterans of the Great Patriotic War and labor veterans, where the idea of creating a museum in the village of Chany was discussed.

The grand opening of the Chanovsky Local History Museum took place on November 7, 1987. The museum was located in a building that previously belonged to merchants.

Over time, the museum's collections significantly increased, and it became clear that the previous premises no longer met its needs. The head of the Chanovsky District decided to provide the museum with a new building, which allowed for the exhibition area to be doubled. The building underwent major renovations using modern finishing materials, and now the exhibitions, stands, and interior meet contemporary standards.

The museum has become an important center for methodological support for school museum leaders, students, and pupils. It is visited by at least 3,000 people annually. Museum staff actively use various forms of educational work, taking into account the age characteristics of visitors. For young guests, not only exhibitions and collections are organized, but also meetings with interesting people, ecological activities, and celebrations. Young people are attracted by lessons of courage, classes on material sources, literary and local history quizzes, while for the older generation, musical evenings, meetings, and club sessions are held.

Exhibition activities are an important part of the museum's participation in modern life. Exhibitions are organized both from the museum's own collections and from private collections of local residents.
