On August 1, 1869, an almshouse for 30 people was opened in an old house on Voskresenskaya Street in Kaluga. The funds for its creation, amounting to 41 thousand rubles, were provided by the owner of the house, merchant of the 1st guild Osip Pavlovich Pestrikov.

Before the revolution, Voskresenskaya Street was considered one of the most beautiful in the city. It featured stone two-story mansions surrounded by apple orchards. The houses on this street mainly belonged to well-known merchants and wealthy individuals, including the Pestrikov family.

Osip Pavlovich Pestrikov, born in Kaluga in 1797, was one of the richest and most respected merchants. He was engaged in trade, opened a banking business, and invested in the development of industry and construction.

Pestrikov donated his two-story stone house at 6 Voskresenskaya Street to the city for the establishment of the almshouse. The house, built in the late 18th century, was solid. It housed 30 elderly and poor residents of Kaluga. On the second floor of the almshouse, a church was consecrated in honor of John the Baptist in memory of the rescue of Emperor Alexander II in Paris from the assassination attempt by the terrorist Berezovsky. Pestrikov was actively involved in charity, providing financial assistance to the real school, the church of John the Baptist, and helping the needy acquire medicines.

In the same building, in 1885, the 'Pestrikov Shelter' was opened, which cared for poor students of the real and technical schools, providing them with housing, clothing, and food. Currently, the almshouse building houses a residential building.
