Unfortunately, for some, war means blood and death, while for others, it is an opportunity for scientific research and trials. Thus, fate led 27-year-old graduate of the medical faculty of Moscow University, Alexander Bobrov, to the Russo-Turkish War of 1877, where he worked in a hospital in Fratesti. There, he gained immense experience and became one of the leading Russian specialists in the treatment of gunshot wounds and bone fractures. Soon after the war, Bobrov wrote an important work, "Guide to the Study of Surgical Dressings," in which he detailed and illustrated the most commonly used dressings, which became essential knowledge for all doctors. This work retains practical value to this day.
Later, Bobrov performed a unique operation that impresses even today. A patient with a gunshot wound to the head came to him, and the bullet was lodged in her brain, yet the woman remained conscious. Using X-rays, Alexander Alexeyevich accurately determined the location of the bullet and successfully extracted it, saving the patient's life. He also made significant contributions to the study of gunshot wounds to the abdomen, developing a device for subcutaneous infusion of solutions, which later became known as Bobrov's Infusion Apparatus.
However, Alexander Alexeyevich did not limit himself to treating gunshot wounds. One day, the parents of a girl suffering from traumatic epilepsy turned to him, and he became their last hope. Bobrov agreed to help and was one of the first in the world to perform a surgery to close a skull defect with an external plate, which helped the girl recover. In 1903, he retired and settled in Alupka, bequeathing 10,000 rubles to Moscow University to support the best students.
