In the mid-1960s, a group of enthusiasts, including Fedotov L.N. and Ivanova K.A., began collecting exhibits for the future museum. The museum was officially founded in 1967 when it started its operations, although it did not yet have a permanent location. However, there was already a museum fund and a strong desire to showcase the collected materials.
The museum received the status of a municipal institution on June 12, 1970. In official documents, its goal was defined as the active study of the history of the native land, fostering love for the Motherland, respect for labor, and honoring the military achievements of fellow countrymen. The first director of the museum was Ivanova Klavdiya Alexeyevna, and an old two-story wooden building on Sverdlova Street was allocated for the museum. Here, research and educational work were actively conducted. A Museum Council was created, which included the head of the city archive, a specialist in monument protection, heads of school museums, representatives from the tourist bureau and the House of Pioneers, local artists, and chairpersons of the city Council of War Veterans and the Society of Book Lovers. The chairman of the Council was the head of the non-departmental security, Ivan Antonovich Neshin, who installed the alarm system for free. The museum was regularly replenished with new historical exhibits that formed the basis of the first exhibitions on the history of the city, such as "Berdsk Before the Revolution," "Struggle for Soviet Power," "Pre-War Five-Year Plans," "The Great Patriotic War," "New Berdsk," and "Berdsk Today." The design of the exhibitions was actively participated in by the artistic workshop of the Berd Radio Plant under the guidance of Bella Mikhailovna Arbit, whose works were displayed on the second floor of the museum.
After K.A. Ivanova retired, the museum was led by Nina Nikolaevna Anosova and Nadezhda Afanasevna Savonenko. Since 1980, employee O.G. Ladik began forming the museum's art fund, which included paintings transferred by the State Museum Exhibition Center "ROSIZO."
In May 1988, thanks to the support of the public and the chairman of the Council of War Veterans Medvedev E.E., the museum moved to a new building at 9 Sportivnaya Street, where it remains to this day. From this moment, the museum became "historical and artistic," and Natalia Alexeyevna Starodubova was appointed its director. Of the 720 sq.m of the new museum premises, 307 sq.m was allocated for exhibitions and displays, and 25.8 sq.m for storage of collections, which continued to grow. The collection of exhibits related to the Great Patriotic War significantly increased thanks to the work of the head of Post No. 1, Melnikov Ivan Andreevich.
In 1991, the museum was headed by Valery Borisovich Veselovsky, who previously managed the museum of school No. 5. He transferred most of the exhibits from the school museum to the city museum and began creating an archaeological collection. Finds discovered during excavations of ancient burial mounds in the territory of Berdsk were included in the archaeological exhibition. The artistic workshop of BRZ designed exhibition displays on history and archaeology, which, despite their temporary nature, lasted more than 10 years.
Directors V.B. Panchenko and V.N. Shakmatova, who took over the museum's management, made it one of the centers of cultural enlightenment for the residents of Berdsk. Interesting exhibitions, lectures on history and art, a puppet theater, and the "Harmony" club attracted visitors to the museum halls. At the same time, the issue of relocating the museum to the central part of the city was discussed, which, unfortunately, remained unresolved.
Since 1999, the museum has been managed by Pashchenko M.Yu., and in the same year, the city museum was transferred the funds of the factory museum of the Production Association "Vega," which form the basis of the permanent exhibition at 89/8 Lenin Street. During this period, the building on Sportivnaya Street was closed for major repairs until 2002. In 2003, a new and unique historical exhibition of the museum, "Turning the Pages of the Book of Memory," was ceremoniously opened.
In 2014, after major repairs, the museum put into operation new premises at 11 Sportivnaya Street, with an exhibition hall, storage, and working offices. In 2016, the museum expanded with two structural divisions: the "House of Friendship" and the memorial museum of the People's Artist of the Russian Federation Vladlen Biryukov, named "Biryukov Theater." The museum was located in a new building at 1 Kirova Street and became the only memorial museum dedicated to actors in the Novosibirsk region. It was included in the "Golden Book of Culture of the Novosibirsk Region" as the best project of the year.
Today, the museum has 16,500 storage units, of which more than 1,500 are part of the art fund. Each year, the museum's fund is replenished with 300 new items. The total exhibition area of all halls is 893.3 sq.m, of which 209.4 sq.m is allocated for storage. Museum staff conduct research work, obtaining new information and facts about the biography of Berdsk from state archives. The museum holds over 100 exhibitions and more than 150 events annually, including museum readings, creative meetings, competitions, game programs, and lectures.
The museum initiates numerous city memorial projects to perpetuate the memory of Berdsk residents. In its fifty-plus years, the museum is full of ideas and new projects, asserting that it is the best place for meetings and communication.
