In 1863, merchant widow Natalia Kozymovna Bakhareva Kamenskaya decided to immortalize the memory of her husband by founding a women's monastery in her native village of Bakharevo. She invited novice Theodosia Norina from the Serafimo-Diveevo Monastery, who organized and led the community. On November 30, 1875, a church of the Protection was consecrated in the village, built with funds from brothers V. N. and A. N. Bakharev, owners of a transport company. N. K. Bakhareva, the sister of the Kamensky brothers, also participated in the construction. By the end of 1880, the monastery had an almshouse and 47 desyatinas of land. E. D. Kharitonova notes that the sisters engaged in agriculture, handicrafts, and brick production. In 1889, a church parish school was opened here. In the early 1900s, hieromonk Serafim Kuznetsov proposed to transform the almshouse into a women's monastery in honor of the birth of Tsarevich Alexei Nikolaevich. It was decided to build a new church for the community on the allocated land. The Protection Church remained in use by the peasants.
Merchant widow nun Anastasia Kuznetsova became the 'builder' of the community. In June 1907, a prayer service was held at the site of the future monastery church, and the church was laid in the Protection. Construction began in the winter of 1909 and was completed by spring. All expenses were covered by P. S. Zhernov and his wife. The church was consecrated on June 23, 1909. At that time, there were 109 sisters in the monastery.
In the summer of 1909, the construction of monastery buildings began: the abbot's house, accommodations for the sisters, and an icon painting workshop. The buildings were wooden on a stone foundation. By 1913, two 3-story and one 2-story house, a bathhouse, a laundry, and other structures were built. A pond was dug for fish breeding, and in 1915, a water supply was laid. The monastery lived an independent life.
After the change of power in 1917, the life of the monastery was disrupted. In 1921, the monastery was transformed into a children's sanatorium 'Podsnezhnik', where over 40,000 children recovered during its operation. In 2005, the sanatorium was named after N.B. Faerberg. The restoration of the monastery began in the spring of 1998. The project for the skete with a household church was developed by Valery Zhekhov.
On December 29, 2000, the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church decided to transform the Bakharevsky skete into a monastery and appointed nun Rufina as the abbess. On the night of September 20-21, 2002, a fire occurred in the monastery, destroying the staircase, but the building and people were saved. The church in honor of the icon of the Kazan Mother of God was restored in the spring of the following year, and then the reconstruction of the Protection of the Mother of God Church began.
The Bakharevsky Monastery is known for its healing springs, the main one being the Kazan spring. It is equipped with a baptismal font and a small chapel. You can reach the monastery by tram No. 5, then through the railway crossing and along a dirt road.
