Mikhail Ivanisov, a forgotten 19th-century poet from Penza, describes this place in his poem. He claims that the area can be preferred over many others, as the mountain's peak stretches three versts wide, while the valley to the north extends eighteen versts. This territory is covered with diverse shrubs, where people stroll from spring to winter. This place, a paradise for man, is a famous stockade through which the road leads to the state garden. This garden, known to many, is the orchard of Penza.

The garden boasts up to a thousand varieties of plants suitable for rooms, vegetable gardens, and orchards. Here, one can find trees and bushes from all over the world, including apple trees from paradise and flowers from Beijing. The garden offers a variety of supplies, from spinach to pineapple and cabbage of all sorts. Even nettles grow here in such a way that each year they multiply their yield without irrigation.

Closer to the city, half the mountain is lined with gardens, from which ridges extend along the gorge. Along the alley, two booths were installed, of which only one remains. Here lived the guards who took care of the forest's improvement. The state garden began at the zemstvo hospital, now a regional one. Despite its distance from the city, the garden was popular among townspeople, and the walk to it attracted many, both on foot and in carriages. The alley ends at a slope where a horticultural school was established.
