The village of Abey in the Inta district was founded in 1932 as a camp point of Ukhtpechlag. Since 1938, it housed units of Sezheldorlag, the administration of Sevepechlag (Pechzheldorlag), and the Northern Administration of Railway Construction Camps.

From 1949 to 1956, an invalid (sanitary) department of Minlag operated in Abey. Between 1957 and 1959, the camp in Abey was part of Pechorlag. Over the years, notable figures imprisoned here included philosopher L. P. Karsavin, art historian N. N. Punin, archpriest Konstantin Shakhovskoy, Jewish poet Sh. Galkin, art historian V. M. Vasilenko, writer R. A. Shtilmark, historian and future academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences M. A. Korostovtsev, brigadier general of the Lithuanian Republic army Juodishius, and others.

In 1989, the Abey branch of the Ukhta-Pechora Memorial Society began work on the improvement and memorialization of the cemetery at the invalid department of Minlag, which has been preserved in the village. That same year, a public Museum of the Memorial Cemetery was established, which became a department of the Inta Local History Museum in 2001.

Today, the Abey branch of the Inta Local History Museum represents a complex of four monuments and is called the Abey Historical and Memorial Complex. It includes:
