The Zvenigovsky District Local History Museum, one of the youngest in the Republic of Mari El, began its work on September 16, 1998, with the aim of preserving and developing the historical and cultural heritage of the Zvenigovsky District. Its first director was Vasily Yefimovich Okhotnikov, thanks to whom the museum was created.

Today, the museum's collections include more than 8,000 exhibits, of which over 5,000 make up the main collection. To replenish the collection, museum staff conduct expeditions to the villages and settlements of the district every year.

Modern museums are primarily scientific research and educational institutions. An important indicator of their work is the participation of staff in scientific conferences. The staff of the Zvenigovsky Museum actively participates in the International "Evseev Readings," republican competitions, seminars, and other events.

Throughout the year, the museum organizes more than 40 thematic and traveling exhibitions and conducts over 300 excursions. Popularity is enjoyed by field trips to the cities and villages of the Republic of Mari El and beyond.

Mass and traditional events play an important role in the museum's activities, such as the Zhibrikov Readings, the district conference for schoolchildren "History and Culture: From the Past to the Present," the scientific-practical conference "So That We Remember," dedicated to the Great Patriotic War, as well as the "Night at the Museum" and "Night of the Arts" events.

The museum actively collaborates with educational institutions in the district, offering museum-educational programs, master classes, lessons, and lectures on various topics.

Museum staff are full of new ideas for creating interesting projects aimed at making the museum not just a repository, but a lively and cozy place for visitors. The Zvenigovsky Museum not only preserves the past but also lives in the present, looking toward the future, which reflects its development and dynamism.
