In pre-revolutionary Penza, there were many diverse churches, which even amazed travelers. In addition to churches, the city also had chapels. One of the most revered was located behind house number 15 on Kirov Street.

The history of this chapel began with a small spring that flowed from under the mountain, where the observation deck is now located. In 1765, a former monastery peasant, Fyodor Bochkarev, decided to build his own church and erected a small wooden chapel next to the stream. According to the memories of contemporaries, real miracles soon began to occur. The first cases of healing date back to 1831. That summer, an epidemic of cholera broke out in the city, and, as it is claimed, an angel appeared in a dream to the wife of titular advisor Paraskeya Mazyryna, instructing her to pray to the icon of the Life-Giving Spring. The woman followed the advice, and soon all the sick were healed. Since then, the chapel became highly revered. The diocesan leadership even allocated funds for its improvement. In the mid-19th century, the chapel was rebuilt from wood to stone, a refectory for 250 people was added, and the side altars were expanded. The residents of Penza considered the local spring sacred and collected water from it in buckets.

The chapel fell into disrepair and was completely destroyed in the mid-20th century. The spring itself also disappeared, likely having dried up.
