Women's Diocesan School in Krasnoyarsk

Фото 1
The Women's Diocesan School opened in Krasnoyarsk in 1886 for the daughters of clergy. In 1909, a building was constructed for it based on the design by architect Sokolovsky on Voskresenskaya Street, now Mira Avenue. The upper floor housed classrooms, a hall for games and recreation, as well as a room for the educators. The lower floor contained dormitories for the students. About 90 students studied the Law of God, literacy, arithmetic, physics, geography, and handicrafts over three years. The main goal of the education was to prepare the daughters of church servants for the role of priests' wives.

It was immediately decided to build a school chapel, for which the honorary citizen Iulitta Tokareva donated 8,000 rubles. In August of the same year, the foundation stone was laid. The church was built as an extension of the main building's facade. In 1904, a decision was made to construct a new school building, which was completed only in 1910. This three-story building, designed by architect V.A. Sokolovsky, became one of the most beautiful structures of pre-revolutionary Krasnoyarsk. The architectural decor of the building is rich in details, but due to the correct proportions and composition of the facade, it appears harmonious. The total area of the building is about 1,800 square meters. In 1908 and 1909, a team of sixty workers from Smolensk was involved in the construction of the stone building.

During their studies, the students acquired pedagogical skills and could begin teaching after completing the course. Many of them became teachers in church parish schools. To accustom the students to household management and domesticity, duties were organized in the dining room, dormitories, classrooms, and kitchen. The girls maintained cleanliness and order. In the dining room, the duty students set the tables, served food, bread, kvass, and all necessities, collected and washed the dishes. Daily, one student from the senior classes was exempted from classes and appointed as the kitchen duty. She participated in cooking, washed laundry, and kept track of the consumed products. All students were trained in handicrafts. Those living in the dormitory sewed and repaired their clothes. Each senior student mentored a younger one, for whom she sewed a dress and taught her to mend clothes. The younger ones also learned to sew and knit stockings. During handicraft sessions, readings were held aloud, organized by the educators or the students themselves.

In 1917 and 1918, the building hosted plenums of the Krasnoyarsk Council of Workers' and Soldiers' Deputies, housed the Krasnoyarsk Committee of the RSDLP(b), and the editorial offices of the newspapers 'Krasnoyarsk Worker' and 'Siberian Truth.' In 1944, the building was transferred to the Krasnoyarsk Geological Administration. It currently houses the territorial fund of geological information, a hotel, a police precinct, and a service center.
