One of the most significant works of the renowned Russian architect Nikolai Petrovich Krasnov during his emigration is the building that today houses the government of Serbia. It was originally constructed for the Ministry of Finance of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes.

The construction of the new building on the site of the old one began in 1926 by the order of King Alexander I Karađorđević. The project was entrusted to Russian émigré Nikolai Krasnov, who had already established himself in the new country with several major projects. Krasnov approached the work with particular care, considering everything from the exterior appearance of the building to the smallest details of the interior. He personally designed the windows and doors, decorative plasterwork, wooden panels, metal grilles, and even the furniture design.

The construction was completed, and the building was consecrated on October 18, 1936, after the assassination of King Alexander I Karađorđević. The ceremony was attended by the young King Alexander II Karađorđević. The building survived the bombings of Belgrade by German forces in 1940, as well as withstood air raids by Soviet and British/American aviation. Today, this building houses the government of Serbia and is a beautiful architectural monument symbolizing the contribution of Russian émigrés to the cultural heritage of Yugoslavia in the first half of the last century.
