The Vvedenskaya Church in Tambov

Фото 1
The church, consecrated in honor of the Entry of the Most Holy Theotokos into the Temple, was considered one of the most beautiful in old Tambov. It was built with the funds of Mikhail Stepanovich Ashurkov, a wealthy merchant and honorary citizen of the city. The Vvedenskaya Church served as a center of mercy and charity.

The temple was erected in 1887 at the intersection of Bazar and Pokrov streets, now known as Kronstadt Street. A parish school and a large library operated at the church.

Architecturally, the Vvedenskaya temple was a massive quadrangular building with a multi-tiered bell tower. It was topped with a large cylindrical drum with a dome and a cupola. Similar cupolas adorned four small towers located at the corners of the building.

In 1934, by decision of the authorities, the church was closed and soon dismantled. In 1949, a building for City School No. 9 was constructed on its foundation.
