On the streets of Mayakovsky, Parkhomenko, and Lagernaya, residential buildings now stand, but they were built on former cemetery land. Since the late 18th century, the All Saints Cemetery was located here, which was later destroyed. The necropolis was situated beyond the city limits, near the village of Grafovka, and the first burial took place in 1796. This cemetery became one of the main ones in the city, with part of its territory considered elite. Among those buried here were the manager of the Penza branch of the State Bank, Bekman, architect Rudkevich, merchants Ochkina, and many others. In 1817, the All Saints Church was built next to the cemetery, where the deceased were commemorated. Burials at this cemetery continued for almost 100 years until the early 20th century when the city council raised the issue of its closure. Over the century, the necropolis significantly expanded, and graves approached the right bank of the Sura River, leading to soil erosion and coffins falling into the water. This sight shocked the residents and guests of Penza. In 1903, the cemetery was finally closed. Almost 30 years later, during the Soviet era, the All Saints Church was closed, and then the cemetery itself. All graves were leveled. There is an opinion that the sunken pits in this place, former burials, still exist, and there are rumors that water continues to wash away bones.
